Curb Appeal 101 — The First Impression Before They Walk In
Buyers form an opinion about your home before they even reach the front door — often before they get out of the car. That first impression, good or bad, colors how they see everything else during the showing. Here's what actually moves the needle.
Why curb appeal matters more than people think
Most buyers see your home online first — and the exterior photo is usually what determines whether they click into the listing at all. In person, that same first glance sets expectations for the whole showing: a well-kept exterior signals a well-kept interior, while a neglected one makes buyers walk in already looking for problems.
Where to focus your effort
The front door area - A clean, freshly painted or polished front door, a new welcome mat, and clear house numbers make an outsized difference for very little cost. This is the single most photographed detail of your home's exterior — worth getting right.
Lawn and landscaping - A trimmed lawn, edged walkways, and tidy plant beds signal upkeep. You don't need an elaborate garden — just visible evidence that the yard is cared for, not neglected.
Lighting - Working exterior light fixtures matter more than people expect, especially for evening showings or listing photos taken at dusk. Replace any burnt-out bulbs and clean fixture covers that have gone cloudy over time.
Driveway and walkways - Pressure-washing a driveway or walkway is one of the cheapest, highest-impact fixes available — it instantly makes a home look newer and better maintained.
Decluttering the exterior - Trash cans, garden hoses, toys, and stray equipment should be tucked out of sight before any showing or photo session. An exterior that looks "in use" rather than "staged" undercuts the same effect you're working to create indoors.
What to skip
You don't need a full landscaping overhaul or expensive hardscaping to make an impact. Curb appeal is about removing distractions and creating a clean, cared-for first impression — not adding elaborate new features that won't recoup their cost at sale.
Curb appeal is staging too
We often think of staging as something that happens indoors, but the exterior is the first — and sometimes most important — room buyers "walk through." A strong first impression outside makes buyers more receptive to everything they see once they're in the door.
